For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Matthew 16 v 26 KJV
Looking through the whole chapter you can see Jesus was well known and He was special or different from all people they knew past or present. They could not comprehend that his speaking was not of this world and I suspect troubled in their spirits,so they provoked Him in order to see if they could have understood him, hence they asked Him for a sign. He refused giving them a sign except Jonas three days in the whale’s belly, signifying His death in order to save us from our sin, or in my opinion rejection of God for His enemy Satan. God Loves us so much He does not want to let us Perish or be separated from Him eternally, so he came in flesh to take our suffering upon Himself so that we can become His children.
Peter did not understand that Jesus was talking about our spirit and His mission was to save our Spirits from eternal comdemnation or Hell, so Peter tried to save Jesus from the suffering he was about to undertake, therefore Jesus told them it would not profit a man anything even if he gains the whole world and lose his own soul or there is nothing a man could give in exchange for his soul.
I cannot imagine how one spirit feels being tormented permanently but I know God do not want us to be in that situation, hence His reason for coming amongst us in Jesus and if we follow Jesus we will be contented on earth and would live happily ever after in the spiritual world with God our father and creator.
My life experience proves that Jesus is real:
