John the Baptist said
Repent ye: for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand
Matthew 3 v 2
In those days came John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying repent ye for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.
It could have been he was speaking of Jesus arrival on earth and that Jesus was the King of heaven and his Kingdom was coming to earth.
John was in the wilderness warning the people to repent.
Why was he warning the people to repent because the Kingdom of heaven is at hand?
If you notice he was not speaking of an earthly kingdom, he was speaking of an heavenly Kingdom and it could be no other than spiritual.
In those days the nation of Israel was engaged in deep disobedience/provocation to God. They were the people God had interaction with. They were his chosen people/children through Abraham but they were rejecting God and his love for them. You would understand how God feels if you are a parent and your children turn against you.
God made the world and everything in it and his love for the world was too much for him to just ignore it. He had a plan to save us from eternal seperation from him and his plan was about to be accomplished, hence John was warning the people to repent, which means to turn away from their disobedience and turn back to God, then they would have known Jesus. He came unto his own but they did not know him.
In today’s world how can one turn away from disobedience to obedience? First you need to know God, his love for you, why he is seperated from you, how you can repent and receive the protection and care he has for you spiritually.
The children of Israel knew the scriptures and all the rules and regulations God had given them to follow in order to please him, so they were privileged to go back to God at any time but the rest of the people on earth did not have that privilege and God plan was to save not only Israel but all people on earth.
The Kingdom of God was on earth when Jesus the King of Kings was here but Jesus was always saying to enter the Kingdom of God, you must be born again and so on, which means Jesus was talking about the spiritual Kingdom.
To be there we must be saved through Jesus to become a child of God or a citizen, by repentance acknowledging our sins as many as you can remember at the time and accept forgiveness or washing away of our sins by the blood of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ.
This would mean when we are his children we would be in his kingdom on earth as well as in heaven spiritually. A special people.
